I believe that the recorder had an auto stop/start record feature so that it would stop recording when it heard no sound and then restart when it did. There are subtle but obvious jumps occasionally, most notably throughout Beauty Queen and Me and a Gun, that seem like they only would have occurred if the recorder paused itself during the dead silence and then picked up just as she started singing or talking again.
